Sustainability really is key to what we do at Brooks Estates. We incorporate this as much as possible both in-house and on the estates that we manage. Our in house ecologist works closely with our groundskeepers, local consultants and environmental services to ensure we are maximising the land that we are responsible for to encourage and support native wildlife, plant life and natural ecosystems.
We always look to incorporate wildlife-friendly measures in our maintenance schedules, we don’t use nasty pesticides in planted areas, we won’t strim, cut back or disturb hedgerows during nesting season and we are constantly exploring new ways to promote low carbon, biodiversity measures wherever possible. We are certified Carbon Literate through The Carbon Literacy Project so can provide invaluable advice on a development-by-development basis.
Our partnerships and collaborations with local organisations such as the Cornwall Wildlife Trust, One Bag Beach Clean, Plant 1 and Kernow Conservation provide a wealth of support and assistance with invaluable environemtal work and advice. We are also registered Clean Cornwall Change Makers which places us at the heart of the sustainable business community in Cornwall.
We visit and evaluate each development individually and where possible we will implement areas such as community orchards, planting areas, composting areas and nature projects for children. We introduce bird boxes, bat boxes and try to encourage our developers use bee bricks in their properties – working with local suppliers such as Green and Blue who have some incredible designs for incorporating nature into new builds.
We believe the developments that we manage should promote a sense of belonging and community spirit and take every step we can to encourage and support this. We have an allocated email inbox for each site and strongly encourage residents to communicate with us, sending ideas, photos, events and more for us to share.
Community is equally as important to us as sustainability, particularly as the two go hand in hand. We strongly encourage residents to get involved in projects, workshops and activities to promote a healthy, sustainable environment in which to live.
We organise and run regular community events such as beach cleans, litter picks, composting workshops, seasonal fruit and vegetable growing and promote carbon reduction techniques and tips via our quarterly community newsletters.
Our newsletters also promote local organisations and events which assist with living sustainably, they also provide alternative travel options, seasonal growing tips, competitions, areas of community interest and we can also use our collective voices to lobby for change. We are currently petitioning to ask for legally protected status for bees, which shockingly they don’t currently have! You can see (and sign) our petition here.
